Welcome to the webpage for Ms. Benatti's 9th Grade Living Environment Class!
Our class cleaning up trash at Lake Champlain!
The Living Environment is New York State's name for what you might have heard called "high school biology" or "high school life sciences." Whatever you call it, the goal is the same: partaking in the scientific exploration of all living things on Earth and both the cellular and ecological systems that help them survive.
Biology affects all of us and in this class we will learn more about ourselves, all of the organisms we share the Earth with, and how those things all depend on one another.
While we will be preparing to take and pass the NYS Living Environment Regents exam (more on that below), the skills we master in this class will help us be curious and confident members of our community and the world!
This may be a high school class but we will still be focusing on our ABCs:
Always Be Curious!
In our class we aim to think like scientists: make observations, generate hypotheses, design experiments, analyze our results, and adjust our perspective as-appropriate. That approach applies inside our classroom and in life!
Be on time and be ready to learn
Be prepared as possible and ask for what you need
Follow all lab safety rules, it's part of your lab grade
Be respectful to yourself, your classmates, and your teachers
Remember: the only bad questions are the ones that don't get asked.
Be Brave!
I live in Keesevile, NY with my husband, Conor, and our dog, Max. I have an adult daughter who lives in California and we text or talk every day!
I am very passionate about both biology and teaching, though not in that order!
I don't just want to teach my students about science, I want to help them learn how to learn and to develop work and study habits that help them long after they leave my classroom.
I believe that everyone has something to contribute to the classroom and that grades should be based on understanding of content, not on behavior or effort. One student may work extremely hard and produce results that do not meet the standard, while another may not have to work hard at all and ace every assignment. My work is to help all of my students reach or exceed the standards we have set for them and that may mean more effort is needed from me to make that happen!
Please click the links below to see some work that I have done with regard to students with special needs and to see an illustrated guide to my assessment philosophy.
My office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1230-1PM if you would like to reach me by phone. I am available by email and will reply to you within 24 hours, on weekdays. See the footer of each page of this website for my contact details!
Here's to a great year! Remember: never stop learning!

A colorful infographic about the types of assessments my students will be taking and why I think they are important!
An e-book written for educators, to help them understand what is expected and required of schools and educators when it comes to helping our students with disabilities prepare for life beyond school.
A short video, also directed at educators, about why it is so important to collaborate with parents, especially the parents of students with disabilities.
